MDR built for teams that don't have 20 analysts
Most managed detection and response providers are built, priced and sold around enterprise security teams. Pulse is built for the other case: an IT team of one to twenty people, with no night shift and no SOC of their own.
Why generic MDR doesn't fit a small team
A lot of MDR products are designed around the assumption that you already have a security function, a few analysts who triage the easy alerts, an incident response plan that's been tested, a budget line that scales with headcount. For a team of one to twenty people, none of that is usually true. IT is often one or two people doing everything, and "security" is whatever's left over after keeping the lights on.
That's a different problem than enterprise MDR solves, and it needs a service built for it specifically: analysts who handle the whole alert, not just the easy triage, pricing that scales down to your actual device count instead of hitting an enterprise minimum, and onboarding that doesn't assume a security team already exists to manage the relationship.
What Pulse does differently for small teams
What it costs
Pulse packages start from $9 per device per month (€8.50 / £7.50), with volume discounts from 250 devices, billed annually on a 12-month term. That's published pricing, not a quote you have to request. See the full tier breakdown, what's included at each level, and how it compares to hiring, on the Packages page or the dedicated MDR pricing guide.
Getting started without a security team to manage it
Onboarding is built around the assumption that whoever's running point is doing this alongside their actual job, not as a dedicated project. We connect to the tools you already have, agree what we're authorised to do without calling you first, and set written SLAs for acknowledgement and containment, typically within two to three weeks for a team this size, with no infrastructure to install on your end.
Frequently asked questions
Is MDR affordable for a small business?+
Pulse is priced per device, from $9 per device per month, with volume discounts from 250 devices, so a team with 40 or 400 endpoints pays in proportion to what it's protecting rather than an enterprise minimum built for a much bigger company. That's usually a fraction of the cost of hiring even one additional security analyst.
We don't have a security team at all. Can we still use MDR?+
Yes, that's the most common starting point for teams our size. Pulse is built to be the first dedicated security function a small IT team adds, not a supplement to one they already have. Your existing IT staff keep doing IT; Pulse's analysts handle the detection, investigation and containment work around it.
How long does onboarding take for a small environment?+
Most teams of 1-20 people are fully onboarded within two to three weeks: connecting your existing EDR, identity and network tools, agreeing containment authority, and setting written SLAs. There's no infrastructure to install, since Pulse works with the tools you already run.
What happens if we grow past 20 people?+
Nothing breaks. Pulse's package tiers and per-device pricing scale with you, and the service model, analysts investigating and containing within pre-approved authority, doesn't change whether you have 40 devices or 4,000. You move tiers when it makes sense, not on a forced migration.
